Civil & Public Law Team

1 Pump Court's Civil & Public Law Group consists of the Housing & Community Care Team and the Immigration Team. Both teams embody the ethos of 1 Pump Court, providing a service of excellence to mainly publicly-funded clients.

Members of the Housing and Community Care Team offer expertise across the range of cases that arise in their field. We have been involved in many leading cases. Recent examples include Holmes-Moorhouse v Richmond-upon-Thames LBC [2009] UKHL 7, [2009] 1 WLR 413 (homelessness – shared residence order); Birmingham City Council v Ali and others (on appeal from Aweys v BCC) [2009] UKHL 36, [2009] 1 WLR 1506 (homelessness – when accommodation ceases to be reasonable to continue to occupy) and Tomlinson & others v Birmingham City Council [2010] UKSC 8 (application of Article 6 to homelessness decisions). The team operates a rota system for urgent and out-of-hours work.

The Immigration Team is long-established within 1 Pump Court, and in recent years has grown considerably in size. Members appear regularly before the First-Tier and Upper Tribunals, the Administrative Court and the Court of Appeal, and have experience of litigation before the European Court of Human Rights. Within the team, there is expertise on human trafficking, gender persecution, sexuality claims, criminal deportation, unlawful detention, EC law, and applications under the Immigration Rules.

Both teams provide a seminar programme covering issues relevant to practitioners and details are listed on the seminar page. We also provide in-house training to practitioners, which can be geared to individual requirements.
