1 Pump Court Highly Commended in Diversity League Table 2010

Top of the League Tables compiled by the Black Solicitors Network

1 Pump Court is now officially recognised as London’s most demographically diverse chambers  after  publication of the 2010 Diversity League Tables. The report, published by the Black Solicitors Network states that we come top of the table for representation of female barristers (55.3%) and practitioners from ethnic minority backgrounds (32.9%).

We were also Highly Commended in the Diversity League Table 2010 awards category of ‘Talent Management’.

This is the first year such comprehensive analysis of the demographic composition of barristers’ chambers has been reported. We congratulate the Black Solicitors Network on this important milestone and support their work to bring attention to the bars historic lack of diversity and the importance of policy and practice to address this problem and work towards a more representative profession.

The Diversity League Tables for solicitors firms have been running for a little longer and hence are broader in scope. We hope that ultimately this work can be extended to chambers composition, and, for example, the percentage of barristers who are lesbian, gay and transsexual or have disabilities will be reported.

Equality and diversity in the profession has been a fundamental commitment of 1 Pump Court since we were founded in 1978 and this commitment is enshrined in our mission statement and constitution. We are pleased that this commitment has now been recognised. We pride ourselves on inclusivity for individuals from all of the strands of diversity now protected in law with the recent enactment of the Equalities Act 2010 and continue to seek to attract talent from all backgrounds.

Chambers therefore welcomes applications from all talented individuals and particularly from those traditionally excluded from the profession for all positions in chambers including pupillage, tenancy, or as a member of our clerking and administrative team. When vacancies become available they are advertised on our website.

If you have any questions about equality and diversity practice and procedure at 1, Pump Court, or would like to find out more, please contact our Equality and Diversity Officer, Lucie Wibberley, email lwi@1pumpcourt.co.uk.
