Marisa Cohen

Practice

Marisa joined Chambers upon successful completion of her pupillage.  Marisa is committed to providing excellent representation and to using the law to achieve the best outcome for clients.

Marisa has a broad public law practice encompassing immigration and asylum, and housing and community care law.  She has also appeared at the Social Security and Child Support Tribunal.

Immigration and asylum

Marisa appears regularly before the Immigration and Asylum Chamber of the First-tier and Upper Tribunals.  She deals with all asylum and complex immigration appeals, including deportation.  Marisa has a particular interest in appeals involving children and is accustomed at dealing with complex applications for bail.  She is committed to working with Bail for Immigration Detainees, and other pro bono work where funding is not available.

Marisa is also developing a judicial review practice.  Recent cases have involved challenges to delays by the Probation Trust in providing accommodation for the purpose of immigration bail; a failure to issue an appealable immigration decision; a failure to accept a fresh claim; and unlawful detention.  Marisa enjoys working with solicitors early on in the preparation of cases.

Housing and community care

Marisa has appeared at county courts in respect of defending applications for possession orders, and in making applications to set aside warrants of eviction.  Marisa has a particular interest in the application of public law defences, Article 8 ECHR and discrimination legislation.

During pupillage Marisa gained extensive experience of statutory homelessness appeals and judicial reviews in relation to age assessment and unaccompanied asylum seeking children.
