Amean Elgadhy

Amean practices in both criminal defence and family law. 

He has a busy and varied practice in the Youth Court and Magistrates’ Court, he regularly appears at the Crown Court and has appeared at the Court of Appeal.  Amean has a particular dedication to youth justice and representing clients that suffer from mental ill-health and problematic drug use. He also has extensive experience in representing sole traders in licensing matters.

Amean has experience in all levels of family law, in particular care proceedings, from the first interim care hearing through to final hearing and placement orders.  He has a keen interest in the law relating to surrogacy and regularly represents clients in the Family Proceedings Court, the County Court and the High Court.

Criminal Cases

R v Linton Court of Appeal (Sentence).  Defendant acquitted of possession with intent to supply Class A and possession of criminal property. Convicted of simple possession Class A. Successfully quashed sentence of 3 months imprisonment and reduced the fine.  

R v CS – Youth defendant charged with robbery. Having successfully excluded the identification evidence the youth was acquitted at the close of the Crown’s case.

R v KB – Successfully defended a youth charged with three counts of serious domestic violence.

Family Cases

RE M - Assisted in research for Anthony Hayden QC.  The case concerned a local authority that was seeking permission to disclose to children their Father's previous conviction for sexually assaulting his children by a former partner.

RE K – Revocation of a parental order.  Representing a surrogate Mother who was misled into the environment in which she was placing her biological son as part of a surrogacy agreement.

RE P – Obtaining permission to disclose papers filed in family proceedings to the client’s criminal defence team to assist in his defence against a charge of ABH of his former partner. 

Background

Prior to coming to the Bar, Amean was a legal adviser for Release, a drug charity. His role there included staffing the national helpline, advising on a range of legal matters including offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, homelessness and welfare benefit issues.

Amean has written articles for Drug Scope and contributed to a publication entitled ‘Young People and the Law’ and he also has extensive experience of working with client’s suffering from mental ill-health and problematic drug use.  

He has worked at numerous voluntary organizations including the Middle Eastern Centre for Women’s Rights, the Migration Resource Centre, the Apex Trust Employment Law Advice Line and whilst studying at the Merseyside Racial Harassment Prevention Unit.

More recently, Amean gained experience in international criminal law by assisting the defence team representing Charles Taylor, the former president of Liberia tried for war crimes at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in the Hague.

Other interests

Amean enjoys boxing and took part in the Criminal Defence Charity Boxing event in the Grosvenor House Hotel in October and came away unscathed.  He is also well travelled, with a particular interest in the cultures of the South Americas and the Middle East.
