Tahera Ladak
Practice
Tahera Ladak is a specialist family practitioner. Her practice is predominantly in public law proceedings involving applications for care orders and wardship. She represents parents and children in those proceedings, often in cases involving allegations of serious physical abuse, including sexual abuse or where issues of mental health problems or substance abuse are involved. She is experienced in representing parents through the Official Solicitor.
Tahera is particularly sensitive to cases where the cultural background of the parents is an issue and is experienced in cases with elements of international and religious customary law. She appeared on television as a regular legal consultant on issues of family law.
Tahera’s argument in re J (Minors) (Care: Care Plan) [1994] 1 FLR 253 that a local authority seeking a care order should provide a care plan to the court, became central to the way in which care proceedings are conducted.
Tahera has also substantial experience in cases involving abduction of children and the issues arising under the Hague Convention. She has appeared in several important cases in this field, including re B (Abduction: Children’s Objections) [1998] 1 FLR 667.
Tahera has also been in some of the cutting- edge cases around sexuality and children. In Re D (Contact and PR: Lesbian Mothers and Known Father (no. 2) [2006] 1 FCR 556, a case concerning parental responsibility, Tahera represented the child's guardian, whose position on that issue was accepted by the court. She has also represented parents in cases in which gender reassignment has been an issue.
