Matthew Carey

Matthew has a mixed training in both criminal defence and family law.

Matthew is committed to human rights and social justice and representing the interests of the vulnerable, disadvantaged and publicly funded client.

Crime

During pupillage, he has acquired experience of all cases from the Magistrates to the Crown Court. He has assisted with cases involving murder, sexual offences including child rape, offences against the person, fraud and drug cases.

Family

During pupillage, Matthew has benefitted from a comprehensive training in all areas of family law including public and private law children cases and ancillary relief cases, from the Family Proceedings Court to the Court of Appeal. He has experienced care proceedings largely representing the interests of parents.

Background

Before pupillage, Matthew worked with the Citizens Advice Bureaux as a Specialist Caseworker and County Court Advocate, primarily defending repossessions and evictions. He developed strong empathy with his clients strengthening his client care skills.

He sits on the Amicus Executive Committee responsible for internships. He has also assisted with casework as a Senior Caseworker. Amicus is a legal charity dedicated to providing legal assistance to prisoners on death row in the US.

Matthew was an Amicus ALJ Legal intern in 2009 with the Assistant Capital Defender Office in North Carolina working on Capital Murder cases. He assisted with the successful mitigation that the client suffered from an intellectual disability, in that his IQ was below 70, thereby receiving a life sentence rather than a death penalty.

Matthew volunteered for six years as a Referral Panel Chair and Appropriate Adult with the Youth Offending Team. As such he is committed to working with vulnerable clients including youths, those with substance addiction or with mental disorders.
